A Guide to Understanding

Compostable versus Biodegradable

In the growing eco-conscious marketplace, “compostable” and “biodegradable” are often used interchangeably, but these terms actually have different meanings and far-reaching impacts.

Biodegradable
Not always green

Biodegradable does not mean plastic-free. For instance, an “oxo-biodegradable” bag might be made from petroleum-based plastic infused with additives that accelerate its decomposition. Still, it will only ever break down into smaller and smaller microplastics. In other words, the term “biodegradable” is frequently mere greenwashing. Furthermore, the lack of standardized labeling on biodegradable products often leads to unintentional negative impacts after the products have been used, such as contaminating compost and recycling streams, which leads to the contamination of our water and soil — worldwide.

Certified Compostable
Verified, safer, and soil friendly

Certified compostable products are made from plant-based materials that come from the earth and break down back into the earth, creating a circular, regenerative solution that aids the environment. To earn third-party certification, entities like BPI, Compost Manufacturing Alliance, and TÜV OK Compost test the products to verify that they break down into non-toxic compounds, such as CO2 and water, within a set timeframe, usually 90 days, in commercial composting facilities. Although proper disposal is necessary to ensure full circularity, because they are made from natural materials compostable products offer a far better solution for the health of the planet and consumers.

The Choice is Yours

We all play a role in making better packaging solutions that not only meet business and personal needs but also align with smarter sustainability goals. When choosing packaging, look for “BPI-Certified Compostable” on the packaging. It’s an easy way to ensure your choices align with sustainability goals and make a real, positive impact.

3 Takeaways

  1. Compostable products offer a more robust environmental solution than biodegradable products.
  2. Looking for third-party certifications supports proper disposal of compostable products and is crucial to realizing their environmental benefits.
  3. Understanding these differences helps make informed decisions aligned with your customers’ sustainability goals.
