Welcome to our new office!
This September marked a milestone for the Better Earth family. In our continued pursuit to walk the talk on sustainability, we redesigned our Clarkston, Georgia office to further embody our mission, values and environmental goals. We’re excited to give you a sneak peek and share a few tips we learned along the way, and hope you’ll stop by and say hello soon.
Create breathing room.
It’s no surprise that Emerson and Thoreau’s best ideas came from long walks. So why do we still hunch over desks in cubicles? At Better Earth, we wanted to create more space for collaboration, creativity and sunlight. We prioritized big tables, outdoor seating, all the plants we can manage and natural light wherever possible. These low-cost tweaks are already translating to sustainability wins. More natural light means energy savings; a welcoming kitchen encourages us to pack lunch over take-out, leading to reductions in single-use plastic use; and across the board, these changes are boosting team productivity.
There’s no need for new.
We made a commitment to prioritize reclaimed, thrifted and upcycled furniture whenever possible. With a dramatically lower carbon footprint to new furniture made with virgin materials, it was a sustainable choice. Furthermore, it allowed us to invest more dollars in our local community to small businesses, artisans and non-profits like the Lifecycle Building Center. And in the case of LBC, we knew that every table, chair and whiteboard purchased was one diverted from the landfill. This is all in addition to the major cost-savings associated with used furniture. Ultimately, this commitment helped us complete the project 40% under budget!
Tell your story.
It was also important for us to ground ourselves in why we do what we do every day. Instead of paying top-dollar for outside artwork, our marketing team designed posters in-house that feature quotes and startling facts that now serve as our daily motivators.
Get all hands on deck.
From start to finish, this was a team effort. Whether it was painting walls, building shelves, installing sinks, or moving recycle bins – everyone had a role to play. This was critical factor in the project’s on-time completion, cost-savings and, most importantly, our further establishment of a culture of sustainability.
According to Paul Polman, Unilever’s CEO, in the Stanford Social Innovation Review: “The key to creating a vibrant and sustainable company is to find ways to get all employees, from top executives to assembly workers, personally engaged in day-to-day corporate sustainability efforts.” These efforts won’t hurt profits, they’ll drive them.
